Silba/island of Silba

Silba/island of Silba     Comorants

The northern part of the Zadar archipelago (Premuda, Silba, Olib, Škarda, Ist, Molat, etc.) is included in the Eco Zone Network, an internationally important bird territory coded HR 1000034. The sea is shallow in this area and there are many small islands, making it a suitable nesting area for fish-eating birds.

Silba's cliffs are home to the greatest cormorant colony (Phakacrocorax aristotelis) in Croatia. Little tern (Sterna albifrons) and common tern (Sterna hirundo) colonies are found on some of the smaller islands.

The cormorant is a typical sea bird, feeding on small fish and living on rocky islands where it nests on cliffs. It is always at sea, only occasionally visiting harbours, settlements or inland. As it nests on the ground, it does so on cliffs or islands that are inaccessible to land predators.
