Loggerhead sea turtle/Caretta caretta

Description of the species:
The loggerhead sea turtle is the most common kind of sea turtle in the Mediterranean and Adriatic. The population which inhabits the Adriatic is a part of the Mediterranean population which nests on the shores of Turkey, Cyprus and Greece. It gets its name from its large head and strong jaw muscles. Adult species can weigh over 100 kg, and their shell can be up to 110 cm long. In adult animals, the shell is reddish-brown on the upper side, and light yellow on the bottom side. The loggerhead sea turtle is a carnivore, feeding on various kinds of sea animals: sponges, shellfish, snails, sea urchins, crabs, jellyfish and fish. With the onset of winter, the turtles become less active and retire to the sea bottom where they hibernate.

Reasons for threat:
Accidental catching with fishing equipment (especially trawling and stationary nets), pollution of the sea with large waste and organic and inorganic pollutants, degradation of the sea bottom community necessary for the feeding of the loggerhead sea turtle, and disturbance of the population in their winter or feeding habitats.

Protection:
The species is strictly protected in accordance with the Ordinance on designating protected and strictly protected wild species (Official Gazette 7/06 and 99/09). According to the Ordinance on penalties for damage committed by illegal actions against protected animal species (Official Gazette 84/96), the penalty for killing a loggerhead sea turtle is 35,000. kuna.
