Ist

Ist     Interesting facts about Ist

Ist, with its settlement of the same name, is the perfect destination for a peaceful and quiet vacation. The waters around the island are rich in fish, which attracts anglers. The sea-bed is equally interesting, which is something well known by divers. There are anchorages for boats in Mljaka Bay, and guests can find accommodation in private holiday homes. The island of Ist was first mentioned by the name Gistum. In 1311, it was mentioned as Ost, and in 1527 by the name Isto. It has also been referred to as Gist, Esto and Jist. The Croats encountered the Romanic natives on the island, from whom they took the present-day place names of Funestrala, Klunda, Mavrela, Skrivadica, Turtula, Pendulj, and so on.
The grammar school was founded in 1880, and the agricultural co-operative in 1912. The same year the "Ljudevit Gaj" National Reading Room was founded. In the autumn of 1940, the water supply from the water cistern to Bratski Dvor was completed, while today's cultural centre was completed a year later. The main waterfront was built in the Austro-Hungarian period, and was extended in 1947. The post office, with its telegraph, came into existence at the beginning of World War I, while today's post office and clinic building was built in 1983. The island of Ist was supplied with electricity from the mainland in 1966.
On the lookout hill, which is 175 metres high, the Church of Our Lady of Good Health (better known as Our Lady of Snow) was built around 1800 and expanded in 1930. A path with a Way of the Cross stretches from the village to the church.
