Stari Grad/island of Hvar

Stari Grad/island of Hvar     Stari Grad Plain

Stari Grad Plain – archaeological zone
The subdivision of Stari Grad Plain represents a masterpiece of Greek culture in the Mediterranean. In spite of turbulent historic events over the centuries, and many later subdivisions of the fields, its basic 2,400-year-old Greek structure has remained intact.

The Greek hora is well preserved in the stone dry walls that mark the plot boundaries. All later subdivisions (Roman, Medieval, modern) took place within these basic Greek plots and were marked in the same way – by lower or higher dry walls.

Since Stari Grad Plain has maintained an agricultural character throughout its history, it has layers of all the cultures that based their existence on its ownership. It contains almost 120 archaeological sites (from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages).

The importance of Stari Grad Plain was recognised in 1993 when it became protected as an archaeological zone.
