Vela Luka/island of Korčula

Vela Luka (4,464 inhabitants) is the biggest town on the island and is 42 km from the town of Korčula. Vela Luka is both the oldest and newest settlement on the island.

On Spilinski Rat Hill, north-east of the village, at about 100 metres above sea level, you will find Vela Spila (big cave), the most significant pre-historic find on Korčula. The rich Neolithic culture of the Circle of Hvar (3,200 BC) communicated over the sea with their neighbours in the Adriatic and Mediterranean. The attractive collection of finds is exhibited in the Homeland Museum in the Franulović-Repak Palace near the parish church.

Vela Luka developed at the beginning of the 19th century in a deep, protected bay. Besides houses, there are a few hotels and the Kalos rehabilitation centre for rheumatic diseases and post-traumatic conditions. The population works in agriculture, fishing and tourism, and there are also the Greben shipyard , the Jadranka fish-processing factory and other smaller industrial and agricultural facilities.

In the large private exhibition gallery of Anka Prizmić-Sege, opened in 1983, there are numerous sculptures and paintings by this artist born in Vela Luka. The parish church of St. Joseph's is a classical building finished in 1848. The Stations of the Cross - 15 small reliefs - were made by Anka Prizmić. The chapel of St. Vincent's dates back to 1589. It has been renovated several times and contains a bust of Don Ivan Oreb, a priest who did a lot for the cultural development of Vela Luka in the 20th century. This was made by Anka Prizmić as well.

The Hum cultural-artistic society carries out activities connected with music, folklore and choral singing. There are a number of choirs in Vela Luka. The best known are Osjak and Greben. They have had success in concerts in Croatia and abroad with their artistic interpretation of national folk songs.

In the surroundings of Vela Luka, there are numerous bays that are suitable for swimming and sunbathing. The most attractive are the nearby islands of Osjak and Proizd.
