Stari Grad/island of Hvar

Stari Grad (Pharos) is the oldest town in Croatia. The same year (384 BC) as the Greek philosopher Aristotle was born in Trakia, Greeks from the island of Paros in the Aegean Sea established a town on the island of Hvar, and named it Pharos.

Stari Grad (which means Old Town in English) is the historical centre of the island of Hvar. The town is situated in a landscape where the blue of the deep bay touches the green of the wide and famous field of Pharos with its vineyards and olive groves.

The town is surrounded with pine tree forests and cooled by the summer breeze (maestral). In the hot summer days, it is one of the rare Dalmatian places where the air is fresh and sleep is refreshing.

Because of its position in the middle of Hvar, for centuries Stari Grad was a safe harbour for sailors, who were welcomed by the town’s inhabitants on the harbour promenade. Stari Grad Bay is still regularly visited by most travellers on boats sailing through Dalmatia.

The rooms and apartments in private houses in Stari Grad are mostly situated in the northern part of Stari Grad Bay, under Glavice Hill.

The architecture of the old part of the town has been well-preserved and is of great interest to tourists. The locals have managed to modernise their stone houses while at the same time keeping the spirit of past times in a successful union of modernity and tradition.

On the south side of the bay, there are buildings from Austro-Hungarian times, behind which there are separate houses with gardens.

If you continue to the Stari Grad ferry harbour, between the old town and Lanterna town beach, there is the Borić residential area, which has more than 30% of Stari Grad’s accommodation facilities.

The area is surrounded by pine trees and is just 100 metres from Lanterna beach. This part of the town is also very interesting as far as tourist accommodation is concerned because of the vicinity of the beach and also the fact that the town centre is only a few hundred metres away.

Stari Grad is the ideal starting point for long walks and trips on the sunniest and most scented Adriatic island. The comfortable private accommodation, taverns and restaurants with healthy local food and excellent island wines will give you a holiday you will never forget.
