Collection of the Benedictine Abbeys of St John the Baptist and St Anthony the Abbot

The collection includes valuable paintings, such as temperas on wood. The oldest amongst these is The Kings' Reverence from the 15-16th century, and there are also some from the 17th century as well. There are also temperas on wood dating from the 18th century. The Ascension of Mary is from the 18th century and is oil on copper. The paintings mostly originate from Venice. There are some 19th century paintings. Some polychrome sculptures are also part of the collection, such as St John the Baptist from the 17th century and St Anthony of Padua and Our Lady of Snow from the 18th century. There are silver objects such as candlesticks, ciborium, chalices, monstrance and icon lamps, mostly 17th and 18th century Venetian craftsmanship. One chalice with plate is a work from Dubrovnik. As far as reliquaries are concerned, six in silver dating from the 17-18th century and two in wood from the 18th century are worth mentioning. One case exhibits 20 relic boxes from the 18th century. Benedictine nuns care for the red cloth and silken handiwork. Goldsmith’s tools, scales, crosses and ornaments made by the craftsman Pavlović in the 18th and 19th century are also of interest, as are the ceramic and glass kitchenware (28 pieces). The collection proudly boasts aloe lace made by Benedictine nuns.

Hvar Franciscan Monastery Art Collection

Hvar Franciscan Monastery and its church were built in the middle of the 15th century. In what used to be a dining room, there is the well-known painting The Last Supper, dating from the end of the 16th century, the work of an unknown artist (perhaps Ponconi/Pončuna). There are also other valuable paintings from different centuries displayed in this room. In the other room, there is a valuable numismatic collection: a copy of Ptolemy’s atlas printed in 1524 and paintings by artists such as Palma the Younger, Blasius of Trogir and Bassan. There are also valuable corals, antiphonals, chalices, reliquaries and clothes. The library holds ten thousand books, amongst which there is a large number of incunabula (around 70) and books dating back to the 17th and 18th century, making it the richest monastery library in all of Dalmatia. In the yard, there are the well-known Hvar cypress trees that are rare in nature due to their outspread crowns.
