Brgulje/island of Molat

Brgulje/island of Molat     History of Brgulje

The residents of Brgulj, around 60 of them, are mostly pensioners. In summer, the number of residents increases due to the many Croatian and foreign visitors. Some residents work the land to meet their needs, and also go fishing and grow vegetables. People from Brgulje were known as fishermen, beekeepers and livestock-breeders. Viticulture was also well developed, but olive growing less so.

From 1639, the islands of Molat and Brgulje were for some time leased by the aristocratic Soppe and Borgo families. Finally in 1640, Molat and the island of Ist, as well as half of Tarac in Kornati, together with 110 fishermen who were financed by the Detrešić family, were all bought out by the wealthy Lantana family from Zadar. They remained the owners of Molat till the end of the 19th century. The Lantana family were originally from Bergamo in Italy and had come to Zadar in the 16th century. In the second half of the 19th century, they sold their rights to the island of Molat to the Abelić family.
