The Šilo-Crikvenica swimming marathon has been bringing these two towns together since 1910. In that time, it has grown into a unique sporting event attracting both recreational and professional swimmers. The international swimming competition, between Šilo on the island of Krk and Crikvenica on the coast, took place for the first time in 1910, when it was organised by the Health and Tourism Commission. Since then, the marathon has always taken place on the 14th or 15th of August on the feast of the Assumption of Mary, the patron saint of Crikvenica.
