Brioni National Park

Brioni National Park     Koki: the big yellow-crested cockatoo

Koki, Tito's well-known cockatoo, is a legend on the Brijuni islands. It is a rare example of a yellow-crested cockatoo, which can live up to 100 years. It belongs to the larger species of parrots and is characterised by its stocky posture. It has a pretty, robust and corpulent body and measures 50 cm in height. It has a strong and robust bill and a crest on its head. It is a very intelligent, sociable and gentle species of bird which likes bathing.

Koki was a gift that Josip Broz Tito gave to his granddaughter Aleksandra - Saša Broz for her 9th birthday. For a while, Koki was absent from Brijuni, but during the last three decades, besides the elephants Sony and Lanka, has been one of the biggest attractions on the island. Because of his contribution to tourism in the Brijuni islands, Koki has been given a "summer residence", and during the summer period sojourns in the vicinity of the Hotel Neptun-Istra rather than at the pheasant farm.

This white 52-year-old with yellow feathers, is the incarnation of a good tourist worker, a creature that knows how to be lively, seduce and be the centre of attention for an unlimited time. He talks, flaunts himself and sometimes asks you to "give me 5". He also certainly knows many of the secrets of Brijuni. He talks when he is in a good mood (Folks, how are you? What's your name? Koki, Hello, Tito, etc.) Almost all the famous people that have visited Brijuni have taken a photo of him (for example: Princess Caroline of Monaco, John Malkovich, etc.)
