Poreč/Istria

Poreč/Istria     History of Poreč

All of the old town of Poreč is a tourist stage. This is a place where you can learn from the historical monuments, and read from the facades and stone paved streets that date back to the Roman era.

Poreč is called Parenzo in Italian and Parentium in Latin. In its 2,000 years, the whole history of Europe has passed through it: the Romans, Aquilea, the Huns, Byzantines, Slavs, Avars, Ostrogoths, Lombards, Francs, Venetians, Napoleon, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia and today Croatia. The peninsula was settled in the prehistoric era. It assumed its present shape under the Romans over 2,000 years ago following their conquest of the Histrians. First, it was an army camp and then a fortress before developing into a commercial and administrative centre called Colonia Julia Parentium.

Poreč has maintained its simple ancient urban appearance right up to the present. Its two main streets, just like 2,000 years ago, are called Decumanus and Cardo Maximus. There is also a large square, the forum, next to the remains of the temples of Mars and Neptune.

The most unique monument is the Euphrasian Basilica, an early Christian cathedral, but there are many other symbols of the 2,000 years of history of the town.

The old heart of the town of Poreč is also a great place to have fun. Ancient Decamanus, the main street of the old town, is a perfect promenade during the summer. Even if you haven't planned anything, something will catch your attention: jazz in the Lapidarij museum or a classical music concert in the Basilica; summer cocktails on the ancient Marafor Square, or simply watching the streams of people passing by. Wherever you go in the old town, everything has a distinctive charm because it pulsates with both the ancient and modern. Some of the streets and squares are the stage for a summer street art festival.
